Your mother wanted to you to learn a little feminine risk aversion. Which isn’t a bad thing, if you were growing up surrounded by risk-taking men and boys pushing you to take ridiculous risks in your teens. Mother’s nagging voice of caution is a positive in an environment where nobody else will tell you “Don’t bare-handedly climb a 20 ft cliff face.” You might still have done it anyway, but that ingrained feminine risk aversion would have helped you to realize the danger that a teenage boy’s mind sometimes can’t detect, motivating you to respect the cliff.
